Mobile websites

for reading, chatting or shopping. The mini displays of mobile devices require a different type of web design - for a variety of reasons.

Manuel Ressel, Conversion Designer at Web Arts AG, advises:
"It's worth putting your money into implementing mobile templates for your website. With HTML5, CSS3 and mobile Javascript libraries, websites can be developed relatively cheaply that can be used comfortably on mobile devices and also work on all devices.

Whether an investment in a mobile version of the website actually pays off should be checked on the basis of your own figures:

  • How many visitors use mobile devices?
  • How many visitors are already buying via mobile devices without optimised offers?
  • How is the use of mobile devices developing?
  • Is a purchase even possible with the current status of the website?
  • How are competitor shops positioned in the mobile market?"

Ressel gives some basic tips:
1. whether it's a lead or an order, make sure that the goal is quickly recognised by the user and can be executed. Also keep an eye on which functions users of mobile devices mainly utilise.

2. do not offer website content 1:1 for the mobile site. Content should only be a few kilobytes in size so that the page is guaranteed to load quickly.

3. customise the navigation to your goals. As mobile users usually visit the website with a specific goal in mind, this should be displayed prominently at the top of the visible area.

4. optimise forms to meet the needs of your mobile users

5. be prepared for abandonment and interruptions

Extra tip: Use the context and take advantage of the possibilities offered by mobile devices. For example, show the user the shop in their neighbourhood and thus also support the other sales channels.
