With its new version, the software manufacturer brings forward-looking possibilities. The decision as to whether direct use is worthwhile should be made on an individual basis. Shopware 6 is in the starting blocks. And even though the final version is not expected to be launched until the end of the year, many online retailers are already asking themselves the question: Is it worth switching to version 6 for me? We want to help you decide and have taken a closer look at the pros and cons. Before we start our comparison, you should first ask yourself what requirements and expectations you have of your own shop and what needs the software should fulfil.
What changes does Shopware 6 bring with it?
With the new version, Shopware is shifting from a software for online shops to a system for the entire e-commerce process. By focussing on the API-first approach, Shopware no longer just creates interfaces to marketplaces and mobile applications, but now also enables retailers to connect to stationary POS systems, social media channels and Internet-of-Things connections, for example. The future has also been considered: voice and conversational commerce can be easily connected with the new version.
In addition to simplified administration for developers, Shopware has also optimised the front end and improved the user experience with version 6.0. In the backend, everything now runs intuitively via drag & drop, so that no developer knowledge is required. Many areas can be personalised in the new version. Shopware thus moves with the times, adapting to the increasingly personalised wishes and requirements of consumers. A rule builder enables customer data to be converted into rules and conditions. For example, discounts can be customised according to weekdays or product prices according to customer types.
By the way: Shopware 5 remains open source. You can find out more about the new features <link https://www.shopware.com/de/produkte/shopware-5/>here
Shopware AG is taking a step towards the future with its new version. Is it worth using immediately after release? It all depends.
What do shop operators who are already successfully running their shop with Shopware 5 do?
You are established on the market with your online shop, achieve a good ranking in search engines and your last relaunch was not long ago?
Then we recommend: First of all, keep your feet still. With over 3,500 extension options, Shopware 5 offers a wide range of features. It is not yet clear whether all these features will be available in Shopware 6 right from the start of the new version. In the event of a radical changeover, potential expansion options may be lost. If your shop is currently running well, it is therefore not a good idea. Also think about the status quo of your service providers. They also need to familiarise themselves with the new software and build up their expertise. However, you don't need to worry that Shopware 5 will be old hat with the new version. Shopware AG will continue to provide updates for the old version for another five years. There will even be new feature releases in the first few years. Security updates are even guaranteed until 2024. Looking to the future, you should of course get to grips with the new Shopware version sooner or later - but there's no rush.
And what do beginners do who want to get their project online as quickly as possible and launch a shop?
Do you want to position yourself on the market and see success as quickly as possible? Do you also have relatively low requirements and a relatively simple project? Then we recommend that you get to grips with Shopware 6 straight away. After all, it could hardly be more future-orientated and modern. Because in this case no customer data needs to be transferred and no features or processes need to be adopted, you don't need to worry about any negative effects. Shopware 6 offers the perfect platform for projects that don't need a lot of bells and whistles. Simple handling and self-explanatory features offer beginners a safe launch of their webshop.
Do you want to connect more than basic interfaces and payment service providers? Then it might be worth waiting a little longer and starting with the old, established Shopware version. Before service providers can really get to grips with the new version to show you all the possibilities, the manufacturer itself must fix any bugs that occur and eliminate possible sources of error. If you want to play it safe and are dependent on expert knowledge, stick with the tried and tested for the time being.
What about shops that rely on customised business models?
Do you want to secure a competitive advantage with your shop and rely on a customised business model? Then we recommend the early use of Shopware 6. As a first mover, you can benefit from the flexibility in price calculations, customisability and the connection to new technologies. Because Shopware 6 no longer requires any extra programming, you also save on budget. But be careful: Shopware 6 should only be used directly if your project is planned for the long term. Some time may pass before specific features can be used in addition to the basic functions.
