A payment gateway is responsible for processing e-commerce and traditional stationary credit card payments. Examples of gateways are e.g. PayPal, Braintree, Square, and Stripe. A gateway can therefore be seen as a metaphorical checkout. The data between the user and the merchant is encrypted. Authorization is only granted if a payment processor agrees.
